Before the SM7b became the quintessential radio microphone, the RE-20 was the go-to microphone for broadcasters. Also a large diaphragm dynamic microphone, the RE-20 features an extended frequency range that beefs up vocals with extra bass. A built-in high-pass filter helps prevent muddiness and maintain intelligibility, while the fixed cardioid pickup pattern helps eliminate room noise.

For example, if you are a solo performer singing along to tracks and all you bring on stage is your phone or iPod, you’re focusing all the attention on yourself as a performer. If you choreograph dance moves, or play into this isolated, “artist in the spotlight” vibe, perfect. But if you’re only doing this because you haven’t yet figured out how to play this music live, it’s a mistake to get up there in the first place. People look at that stuff, believe me.
What makes Madison so special for touring artists is the diverse nature of its musical culture. With a bubbling scene in everything from classical music to jazz to opera to summer music festivals, and more, Madison is a must stop for touring artists. It’s also home to labels like Crustacean Records and Kind Turkey Records. When it comes to live music, you can catch a show at the High Noon Saloon —named the “Best Venue” by a different organizations including Madison Magazine, the Madison Area Music Awards, and Isthmus — or any number of homey, intimate spaces like Kiki’s House of Righteous Music (shown above).
Your booking emails should be simple. I’ve found that a 1000-word email extolling the values of the bands, your booking skills, and how amazing and exciting the show will be often go unread. Talent buyers get hundreds of emails a day so something simple and concise is the way to go. Feel free to use these templates and change them accordingly:

As a performer, she was recently seen in Sondheim on Sondheim at the FreeFall Theatre in a cast that included Ann Morrison (the original Mary in “Merrily We Roll Along”), and Kissy Simmons (Nala, “The Lion King,” on Broadway). She also loves classical music by angsty Germans, moonlighting as the frontman for a yacht rock cover band, serving on the leadership council for March Chorus NYC, and more.
Some examples of past programs include adding production magic to your tracks, arranging and finishing musical ideas, producing an EP, working on your branding, and getting help building an audience for your music. In an increasingly DIY industry, crowdfunding is also talked about as an option to raise money for working capital to fund new projects. Songwriters and musicians have used platforms like Kickstarter or Patreon to promote projects they believe in and offer incentives, such as a thank you in the liner notes to a copy of the finished album to fans and investors who donate to make their vision a reality.
