Initially, musicians used 808s on their own as the kick. While you can definitely still do that, things have progressed. Nowadays, the subby 808s are most commonly found as a bass tone that’s been layered with a punchy kick sound. This punchier kick layer typically has less bass content and is there to help create a crisper attack. At its most basic, the kick and 808 play essentially the same pattern, but the 808 bass provides the sub and tonal content.

First, they took the sample and pitch-shifted it up a whole step from G♭ to A♭ (thought it sounded kind of chipmunk-esque), then they chopped it up and taped it back together out of order. But what really transforms the music of it is what they didn’t take. So we were right that the singers are singing in A♭ major note logic, but they didn’t sample any A♭ major chords — and how can you have a song in A♭ that doesn’t have any A♭ chords? Also, they didn’t sample any of the bass notes that made some of the singer’s triads into different tetrads.

I dial the threshold to where I’m only getting about 1-3 dBs of gain reduction on the peaks of the audio. I tend to keep it on the lower side of 1-2 dBs of gain reduction. You just want to kiss the needle. You don’t want to have to much mix buss compression happening. Remember, we are going for a subtle, “glue-like” effect.
While effects can certainly be used in serial, you’ll have more control over the sound by creating aux channels for each individual effect. This way, you can slowly bring up the effects until they sit just behind the vocal. Just be careful — you don’t want the effect to overpower the vocal. Try turning the effects up so you can just barely hear them behind the original vocal — so that if you were to mute the effects, you would just barely notice something is missing.

That way, when you sit down to write songs, record music, email a music industry pro, or whatever, you know exactly what you need to do next. Plus, as you cross things off the list, it’s a little encouragement that you’re making progress.
